Whether you are a new voter or a long-time voter voting in your first General Election, you may have some questions about the voter registration and voting process. Here’s what you need to know about voting in Garwood’s 2018 General Election:

When do I vote?

New Jersey’s 2018 General Elections will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, and the polls will be open from 6 am to 8 pm.

Where do I vote on Election Day?

Your polling place depends on where you live. In Garwood, your polling place will either be the Garwood Fire House, Borough Hall, or the Garwood Public Library. You can find your polling place by entering your address at https://voter.njsvrs.com/PublicAccess/jsp/PollPlace/PollPlaceSearch.jsp.

If I am registered to vote by mail, can I still vote at the polls?

If you have registered to vote by mail, you should have received a mail-in ballot to fill out and return. On Election Day, your name will not be on the registered voter list but, if you did not mail in your vote, you can request a provisional ballot.

What if I go to the polls and they tell me I am not registered to vote?

First, make sure you are at the right polling place. If you are at the wrong polling place they will not have your name on the list of voters. If you are at the correct location and are not on the list, you can still cast a ballot. Ask the poll worker for a provisional ballot. After the polls close on Election Day the state will check on the status of your voter registration and if there was a mistake made. The state must notify you as to whether your ballot was counted.

I won’t be around on Election Day, can I vote early?

Yes! You can vote early at the County Clerk’s office in Westfield. Here are the address and the hours:

Office of the Union County Clerk
Frasier Building, 300 North Avenue East, Westfield, New Jersey 07090
Monday / Wednesday / Friday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Tuesday / Thursday: 8:00am – 7:30pm
Saturday: 9:00am – 1:00pm

What else should I know?

  • Be sure the light for the button you depress lights up. This ensures your selection has been recognized by the machine before casting your vote. If it does not light up, you should alert the poll workers.
  • If you’d like your child to come in to watch you vote, make sure they enter to your left. The “Submit Vote” button is on the right, and kids just can’t help themselves but press the big shiny red button! This happens every year. If you haven’t made your selection, you won’t be able. There is no way to undo this.
